cutout

Cutout: using bristol and/or watercolor paper, we made jointed puppets (some using string and tape, some using sticky tack, some not attached, some with replacement parts) and backgrounds. Animating by hand, some students recorded directly into the camera with backgrounds included, while others chose to green screen composite their animation into digitized backgrounds in After Effects or Final Cut Pro/Premiere. Emphasis was placed on creating believable movement, making the viewer forget they are looking at paper, coherent structure, narrative or otherwise, and viewer engagement.
